There is a program on BBC1 TV 9pm in the UK about the alleged faults in breeding pedigree dogs. Should be interesting. Crufts is supposed be in for a pasting from the RSPCA.

Thanks for the link. I was making my dinner and forgot to watch it. alcovixen, are we talking scenes of cruelty here or dense owners who only care about ribbons.

20.August 2008 04:20

It is about suffereing caused by congenital defects if pedigree dogs. There are very distressing scenes in it but it is compulsive viewing.

20.August 2008 04:26

Thanks oldwoman, fore warned is fore armed.

It is about health problems in pedigree dogs.

20.August 2008 05:40

oh .. thats not good.. i have a pedigree dog. but she seems fine to me

20.August 2008 07:05 | changed 20.August 2008 03:05

Yes....I HAD a pedigree dog, but he suffered from massive heart failure (dilated cardiomyopathy). Worst part is, it didn´t appear until he was eight and he sired 5 litters prior to that...I´m certain he passed this on to at least one pup. This is the problem in these breeds...the gene pool is so small....
(I would still get another though....)
I assume it is that type of thing the show is about?? I would like to see it

I saw the program last night, and I now see the Kennel Club in a completly different light. Their attitude to interbreeding and their lack of screening for congenital defects sickened me. What gives humans the right to play God in order to breed dogs that look perfect, even culling pups the don´t fit the breed standard. I just feel so sad for all those pedigree dogs out there living painful and often short lives.

20.August 2008 15:43

I was appalled by the attiude of not only the kennel club but also the breeders. The rhodesian ridge puppies without a ridge, i.e. the only ones not having signs of spina biffida are being routinely destroyed. Also the plight of cavalier king charles is unbelievable. I would never ever get one of those dogs even though I have always liked them. It is just beyond belief that crippled and flawed dogs are winning crufts - like that poor little thing who had to sit in ice in order to breathe - and he had already had surgery on his throat to correct a congenital fault. Some winners! And then there are bull breads, boxers and numerous other breeds with their share of problems.

20.August 2008 15:53

I got upset at that poor dog with epiletsy (spelling), I couldn´t watch my dog go through that, I agree with oldwoman about the rhodesian ridgebacks, how can anyone kill healthy dogs just because of they don´t have ridges

20.August 2008 16:12

Yes, that dog with epilepsy was heartrending. I don´t know how people cope with that either.
