I am going to see one Sunday and might adopt it along with the the gang here. If anyone can tell me about them and how trainable they are I would greatly appreciate it. This one is just over a year old. Thanks, Rock

The Golden Retriever was originated by Lord Tweedmouth in 1868. He used a yellow Labrador, a Tweed Water Spaniel, an I rish Setter, and a sand-colored Bloodhound as the starting breeds of the Goldie. In 1913 the Golden Retriever gained recognition as a breed.
The Goldie is a great friend to children. It is easy to train and gentle, compatible with other animals in the household. This is not a one person dog, but rather an adaptable family dog.
A passionate swimmer and retriever, an outdoor dog that needs lots of exercise and activity. A good candidate for dog sports. Appropriate even for beginners.
For me, The Golden Retriver is one of the best dog breeds in the world. I´m also saving up to get me one. Right now, I have Fuzzy as an honorary member of our Royal D Family. I trained her and she´s great.

I started a thread in the United Golden Retrievers (UGR) Club forum about Infos on Goldens. You might want to check it out. Fuzzy and Me are members of the UGR.

Goldens are great dogs... but are just big puppies until they are two or three so be sure to get a good positive dog trainer to help you teach him the ropes! They will do anything for food so be sure to get a trainer who works with rewards and not "yank and crank", you will be surprised how quickly he learns things if there is a payday for his hard work!

You do need to be careful about weight in retrievers...they will eat until they burst sometimes. So manage his meals correctly (use rations from his meals to use for training) and watch his weight so you don´t have hip and joint problems later.

Regular grooming (brushing out) is important..especially under their ears (neck) and hind quarters as it gets very "full" there and they can develop hotspots in these areas if they get wet and cant´ dry correctly due to the thickness of the coat in these areas.

They are great dogs and I´m sure you will do very well with yours! Good luck!

I have a female for 4 years...I must say that the females are much stubborn than the males and you would have to be very patient and don´t give up if she doesn´t listen to you every time. They are very sensitive and don´t like punishment, even if it is only a scolding (chide),so be gentle and use the food,as Hooplady already said.I hope that you will enjoy with the new gold friend
