One part of the UK has now banned shock collars and made it a crime for anyone who does get hold of one and uses it. Let´s hope the rest of the UK does the same.
Banned shock devices

I saw these for sale on the internet. I did not realise, they were cruel.

26.June 2008 17:55

thats great news hope the rest of the uk follows soon

26.June 2008 17:59

I didn´t realize that those things exist and people use them for their dogs?! that´s terrible, it should be banned for good!

26.June 2008 18:05

is this for real?! its scary.well, it should be banned everywhere.

Thats great news ...hope the rest of the world will follow soon.
I have never had to use them ...but heard all sorts of horror stories and the dogs that suffered from using them.

19.August 2008 14:31

I wish it was that way everywhere. Those things are SO cruel.

Great news

I´m so glad that it´s banned here (I live in Wales!) I hope everyone else follows and bans shock collars everywhere else in the U.K and in other countries. Even if they don´t get banned where you live, maybe you could still not use them anyway?

That´s great news Val.
Here in North America it will be difficult to ban shock collars, they still are fighting against docking and cropping..for an apparently civilized part of the world it´s quite frustrating to see this. There is even a training franchise "Sit Means Sit" which uses ecollars as their only training tool..so sad.

I remember when I was a little girl, and Moe wouldn´t stop barking. So my parents consulted a dog trainer and he intoduced them to one of these horrible things... it took them two weeks to figure out that they were usless, as when he´d bark, he´d get shocked, and yelp.. so he´d be shocked again, a visious cycle. And when we removed it, his neck was soooo raw and horrible. He had to go to the vets and get some expensive teatment. Now whenever I hear these stupid things mentioned I feel so bad for the dogs who´s owners actually try these things. BAN THEM AROUND THE WORLD!

Those are quite popular here in Canada and the US...awful things. You can buy them everywhere...I´ve even seen them in extra small size!!! People are just too darn lazy to take a little time(and patience) and train their dogs...very sad.

20.August 2008 10:31

That is very true DDBcrazy you can buy them at Petsmart....they actually will give you all the details and try and tell you how great they are. My dogs when they bark when just tell them to be quiet, or call them over and tell them no more barking. They know what it means....sometimes they go back and keep doing it but you just have to keep telling them over and over (Plus I think 2 of my dogs have ADD and forget I was talking to them! LOL). People just don´t have the "time" anymore, so they don´t train the dog and wonder why it is acting up....and people are complaining. So very Sad!!

Can I just say that not all collars with little boxes on them are zapper ones. Some spray citronella, and DAP[dog appeasing pheromones to calm the dog] is now available in the form of a collar. I am hoping that the extra small size DDBcrazy mentions are citronella or DAP, although I groomed a little yorkie the other day that came in wearing a chain choke collar.

20.August 2008 16:52

Yes, I´ve seen the ones that spray citronella...a friend of mine got that for her dog and he thought it was a game...once he figured out what it did, he was barking on purpose and trying to ´catch´ the spray, so it actually encouraged barking!
The extra small ones I saw were electroshock, though claimed a very low voltage!!??

I´ve heard of so many dogs who use the citronella as a game. Extra small electroshock collars....man, what a world we live in.

DDBCrazy is right they have a collar for dogs 0-10 pounds that delivers a jolt and they have an "extra strong" one for "stubborn" dogs that is either that size or 10-20 pounds. I had a guy when I worked at Petsmart that had a 12 pound dog but wanted to buy the one for large dogs to make sure that it got his point across. Some people are just lousy.

I can´t imagine shocking one of my dogs....now if they made them for cats....lol

yey! finally!! .. another reason i love the U.K a lot of things out there about dogs and cruelty one thing i hate the most is ear and tail docking which is way above cruel good thing thats banned in U.K too ... am glad U.K. does good progress in safety of peoples pets and i always hated shock collars .. shock collars is a form of lazy owners who can´t teach their pet .. why own one if you can´t train one or buy something that´ll hurt it.. how would you like if we put a shock collar on your neck every time you spoke a word.. would hurt wouldn´t it. And most of those dogs who bark are protecting your house too so if an intruder comes guess you´ll be shocked when your dog is sitting there and someone´s in your house lol.

21.August 2008 00:18

are these shock collars like the "Invisible Fence" collars...where a dog hears a beeping when they get close to the buried cable, then if they continue it gives them a light sting? Or is this something different?

21.August 2008 00:35

kmchampi--No, the collars that we are discussing deliver an electric shock to the dog´s neck whenever they bark or whenever the owner presses the button on a remote control.

Jaline--I think that collars that shock people whenever they speak is a wonderful idea--I think I´ll order one for each of our salespeople....actually I would like it more if it shocked them whenever they emailed me....

22.August 2008 01:39

haha! Ok, thank you cookie, I was confused for a minute. I completely agree though, I think people need the shock collars for speaking....many deserve it. haha.
