Cod liver oil is very bad for dogs. I gave it to my Mikkel, because I thought it would be good for his joints and his coat. In fact it only ruined his digestion - he had very liquid and oily poo and his anal glands clogged up, because he didn´t have to "squeeze".

If you want to give your dog a supplement, my vet says you should give them Omega3 fishoils, either by capsules or a fish oil made from salmon.

My baby have been taking codliver oil since 2yrs old and now she s six. i ll give it to her after dinner daily and she s so used to the codliver oil she ll be waiting for me to pop it into her mouth after her feed. her vet says the oil helps to keep her coat shining and protect her liver. and yes Omega3 is just as good

Not wishing to detract from the undoubted benefits of fish oils, any fat such as beef fat is good for the coat and is also more digestible than fancy oils - not to mention cheaper.

Any fat is good for the coat. I found that suet is the most digestible and conveniet to use. It is the fat that surrounds beef kidneys. In the UK, it used to be sold in the form of small crumbs in a box. and used in cooking. Since the mad cow crisis, it has not been available, which is a pitty. I used to add 1-2 teaspoons of it into each of the dogs´ meal.

Very True! Cod Liver Oil is very good for dog´s coats. I use it all the time as an additive to my dogs meal. 1 teaspoon is just enough.
