What label of dry kibble, or other industrial food? Why that specific brand? Price or the ingredients? Home cooked food or barf/raw food?

I feed my dog mainly dry kibble, but I usually add everyday raw meat, dry meat or my dogs get to eat raw bones in the backyard. The label I feed now is Best in Show, Lamm&Ris (lamb and rice). I chose this food because it was cheap, but still the ingredients were good and it´s a Swedish label and also manufactured therel, so it´s not imported for thousands of kilometers. I feed dry kibble because it´s easy/simple and we travel a lot, so it´s convenient. I still don´t think that it´s the best way to feed dogs, but it works, so why not. As long as the dogs are healthy and content. But of course I add more meat to the diet, because most industrial foods just doesn´t have enough.

Sometimes i get insipired and I cook for my dogs, then I usually give them oat porridge (or pasta or rice), a couple of raw eggs (shells included), fish oil and raw meat (half of the meal).

I feed Barney Burns puppy food. (dry)
It´s one of the more expensive foods but it´s an all natural holistic food that´s cruelty free (free range chicken etc.) I started feeding Burns adult to Taz when he developed skin problems and it made a huge difference, so I decided to stick with it when we got Barney. I mix in some boiled chicken breast, lamb mince, or fish to give him a little variety.

I´m thinking about feeding him on a raw diet when he´s an adult, but I need to do a lot more research first to make sure I get it right.

My dogs dont like kibble ...diz and levi pee on it.
Feed Muffin ,Khan supercoat puppy food ...(no colourings) when muffin is pregnant i feed her the real good stuff from the vet.

Snoop get supercoat small breed dog food .

Diz ,Levi and Ruby get a mix of bonnie or cobber working dog and non-working dog food! (also no colours in the food) as these colours make the dogs hypo-active and cause allerges.

They also get raw eggs 1Xweek, lil added oil, peanuts, fish, brisket bones, chicken necks(raw) and on the odd occassion roo meat... par cooked, veges and leftovers. I dont give any of my dogs cooked bones.

I feed my Harley a raw food diet and he is thriving on it. I used to feed dry dog food but he had allergies to the grains. You can buy grain free dry dog food in the US and UK, but not here in Cyprus, so raw is the way for Harley. Mainly raw meaty bones from poultry and raw pulped veggies, he loves veggies, a little fruit, also raw eggs a couple times a week. I do give him porridge in the morning, but this grain doesn´t cause any skin problems, I add ´Keeper´s Mix´ to this and salmon oil which really makes his coat shine.

Snowdrop had long illness, vomiting blood, and it lasted for three and a half years, so I have had a difficult journey with food. Despite going to The Small Animal Hospital in Edinburgh twice for tests, and the Vet countless times, we never discovered what it was. They suspected a food allergy, but I did not agree. During this time, I sometimes had to almost force feed her, as she did not want to eat at all. I have not in fact changed her diet, so I believe that I was right, and the cause was not connected to her diet.

I feed her on well home cooked chicken, beef, lamb or pork, mixed with some bread, potato or pasta, a daily tablespoon or so of Pedigree Small Bite Mixer, also sometimes fresh fish. She takes three small meals a day, as we were told at the hospital that this is better than one or two larger meals. So I just do the best I can.

She has been better now, for almost a year, so we are keeping our fingers and paws crossed that the horrid sickness has gone for good.

I think it is easy to feed a very small dog on home cooking, as the total amount of meat only adds up to a tablespoon or so at a time, but if you have a large dog, then it would be quite expensive.

She has not eat any vegetables, other than potato, I would like to introduce some, and after reading this, I will give it a try.

She now has a skin allergy, so any tips on this, which could again be caused by diet, or, for that matter, just about anything else - from grass to pollen to house dust, would be very helpful.

hi morag, we feed spike eukanubas lamb and rice because he also have skin allergies, and it seems to work..if you want you can give it a try..

we feed toby and yogi eukanuba small bites because its the only dog food they want to eat.

13.June 2008 12:47

It could be the pasta/bread causing it Morag. Taz had bad skin problems until I put him onto a food with no wheat gluten in it. Brown rice is worth a try as an alternative. (it´s also very good for sensitive tummys)

I give Barney raw carrot slices and raw green beans as a treat and just he loves them. I cook some as well and add them to his food occasionaly to keep it interesting.

All my dogs eat rice mixed with either ground beef or chicken necks that we cook with some veggies. Our cook prepares fresh bowls of food for them everday and they absolutely loved it. I used to feed Maxi Alpo then I switched to Pedigree but he never really liked them. It would be a groveling task just to let him eat his kibbles. I then switched him to rice with either fish meat, chicken meat or pork with some veggies and he absolutely loves it. I still keep some Alpo kibbles in hand coz he considers them "treats" and "snackees" to munch on while waiting for his "manly" food.

I feed Mudge Nature´s Variety raw...it is 95% meat and comes in rabbit, venison, chicken, beef and chicken/turkey. I believe that a raw diet is best for her...no skin problems or health issues. It can be quite costly for a large dog - for the last 6 months of Mambo´s life, I fed him raw and it cost about $6/day. It comes in convenient 1 oz medallions or 8 oz patties (yes...my Dad thought they were burger patties in the freezer and fried one up a couple weeks ago...yuck as there´s bits of bone in it!!)

me too Baybie!!

20.June 2008 15:19

Mika gets fresh raw food. A nice balance of raw bone, meat, organ and fish combined with some healthy veggies and some nice scnacks

20.June 2008 15:38

Amber has Burns mini bites and freshly cooked chicken thigh with the skin removed before cooking so as to reduce the amount of fat. I have been advised all sorts by various vets over the years. The last one said kibble only, no meat at all and she would eat it when she was hungry. (She didn´t agree and went 3 days with no food) Another told me you should only feed household scraps which might be okay if you only have a very small dog but not much good if you are feeding a large breed and I would not think very well balanced either.
