Do certain foods make dogs fart?!

O.K. here´s the deal. My dog Bruno has had gas ever since we got him. I was wondering if it´s his food, or just the way his digestive system is. We´ve changed his food several times already, but it doesn´t change his tendency to crop dust us!! Has anyone else had this experience? It never ceases to amaze me how much gas a single dog can have!!!

Oh come on, stop blaming the dog

But seriously, have you tried feeding on fresh meat and avoiding carbohydrates and commercially produced foods?

Very funny oldwoman!!!!!...but it happens!!!
When my doggies eat too much meats or chicken....when we are sleeping....GEEZ!!!..I have to take them out of my bedroom...I just can´t bear the smell!!!

so funny but true!

There are some foods that are to blame and they often vary from dog to dog but bully breeds and boxers are notoriously bad about it. My husband´s parents have had 2 boxers that would run you out of the room! You might try talking to your vet, as there are some things that can help I believe but you may just have to learn to live with it. Trust me that Henry can be unbearable sometimes.

Sherman doesn´t eat meat or chicken (well, a little meat as appetizer), but he drives everyone out of the house...
I suspect it must be the cat food, he steals - too rich for a dog digestive system - since I haven´t developed eyes on my back yet, he still succeeds to steal something off Rangoon´s bowl.

Ask your vet if Beano can be used on dogs...

I have read of certain digestive enzymes are available as food additives. Maybe that could help?

My dog farts all the time no matter what he eats.....that I can deal with....but it sometimes seems to spread to my husband as well and when they both have the same problem that´s awful. Its like being gassed in stereo

That is so funny! Gassed in stereo.
But seriously - I have two dogs - same breed, same age both eat the same food. Benny farts like there is no tomorrow while Julian never does - or at least I never noticed it. So I think it is like with people it is a personal thing.

This is a great thread!! I have that problem too Jennywxy....except it´s not the husband and dog, it´s the husbands and kids!! They can clear a room...
Anyways, oldwoman´s right...fresh raw, meat won´t cause gas, whereas commercially prepared kibbles can. An added probiotic such as acidophillus or organic apple cider vinegar can help aid in digestion and alleviate gas problems when added to their kibble...
Bon appetit!!

you can see if the food you feed him has liver in it, my family has had 5 dogs (over the years) and each one always had gas whenever we gave them something with a lot of liver in it.

and it may not even be liver for your dog. it could be all artificial stuff making him fart (like DDBcrazy says above). my breeder for paisley said if you want a good food that has more meats than the first four ingredients should be meat products (like innova, nutro is good too).

Well This is all great stuff! I appreciate all the insight. By the way, I do sometime blame it on the dog, but that comes with the territory!!!! Most of the time when i say it was him, IT WAS HIM!!! The raw meat thing sound great, and my dog would go crazy over some straight up beef! It just seems too expensive though. Maybe i´ll give it a shot though.

You only need to adjust the carbohydrate/meat balance, holtondogs. By carbohydrate I mean all commercially produced foods as well including "meats". A dog does not need to eat large quantities of biscuit or kibble. If you do feed meat only, please remember to supplement with vitamins a minerals. Your vet should have a good all in one tablet or powder. You may wish to try and add a spoonful of bran for fibre.

Ravage will get them really bad if he´s had no table scraps that day. I have to spray febreeze or me & my husband might just die! XP

If I give Harvey complete food, he´ll let of a quiet one, now and again !!

Keep him off the bakes beans and curry on a Saturday night. Seriously though I think some dogs are just made that way. Just keep a good air freshener ready. Good luck

This is no funny stuff. Seriously, your dog may have indigestion problems and you should change his diet.
Too much protein, such as raw meat or egg can have this effect too. I would switch to a lower fat/protein content food. There is also medicine to help the digestion, however, that does not solve the problem, it just alleviates it.
