Maybe you should visit your vet- you all will hold Malli and the vet will be cutting nails?

My Princess also dislike it. There was once when I tried to cut and she is struggling and I accidentally cut into it and it bleed. I was so scared luckily it is ok after that. From then, I ask the groomer to do it everytime I bring her there. Maybe you can try for this as well

Well, a vet is a good bet. For really tough dogs,(especially so if their nails are black) they may just anesthise before cutting the nails. I think if too many people held the dog down, she may get even more scared.

Take him to the vet or groomers but in the meantime you can start working slowly with him to get him used to you first just touching his nails and then moving on to the clippers. I never used to be able to cut my dogs either. I started by touching the paws and giving a tiny treat each time they let me...then I moved on to actually touching a nail and applying a little pressure. Next I just had the clippers in their view while touching their nails, etc until I was actually able to clip a nail. The first few times I could only do 1 or 2, but within a couple weeks I could do all of them. I HAD to treat tham after clipping each nail though...never got past that! I made sure to use something really yummy that they weren´t used to... like little pieces of steak! May be worth a try, just takes a little time and alot of patience.

Baybie´s nails are easy to do, I just wrap a towel around her and they are done in 2 seconds. I have never had Sadie´s nails clipped and they are fine. If you have a large patch of concrete near you then get Mali to chase a ball on it, or even just take for walks on concrete streets/roads. The concrete will wear the nails down.

I don´t do Laddy´s nails as I´m to scared to do it, afraid I do it wrong, make his nails bleed of something, When Laddy goes to the vets for his ECGs I ask them to cut his nails (if they need doing), to keep them short I play fetch on the patio to wear them down.

I cut Chloe, Abby, Tut and Moxy--heck Tut loves for me to cut and then file his! But Bear and Henry fight like I´m killing them so we just take them to the vet. There is just too much of a chance of hurting them to risk it. Because, at least for most dogs, if you ever clip too much, you´ll never catch them to do it again.
To help desensitize you can hold him and them touch and flick the nails while giving him treats--it takes a long time though and its not 100 percent effective--just like people some dogs hate certain things. I think that the vet is the best bet--here I think it is like $8 and well worth it!! If a dog´s nails get too long they can cause them to walk strangely and eventually can cause bone and joint distress.

With regards to treats Malli is intelligent enough to get the treat but NEVER his nails. He will finish all the treats without a single nail cut

I used to have the same problem with Poki. He used to get mad like crazy everytime we tried. He ran away whenever the clipper in his sight. Even the vet gave up doing the job as Poki was screaming so loud (and his scream scarred other dogs in the receptionist area).
But last week, we managed to get his nails clipped (well, not all of them yet), but it was a big step. It took three of us to get the job done and the fact that Poki was very sleepy when we did the ´operation´ might contribute to the success
One person was the clipper (try to hide the clipper until you clip the nails), one person patted him continuously soothing him saying that it will be okay and would not hurt, and one person trying to block his view from the nails n clipper. We managed to get his 8 fingers clipped. We will do the rest this week
Good luck to you Gersan.

PLEASE...TAKE YOUR DOGGIE TO THE VET!!!
It´s dangerous...cause they have flesh very shallow from the nails.....
be careful!!!!...it would be so painful for your dog.....

When SILVER was young I did nails then Iclipped her and made her bleed now when she goes to groomers I ask them to do her nails or the vet if she needs them done a checkup time saves alot of hazzle for me and SILVER.

You can also try using a dremel tool and an emery bit to "sand" his nails down. I´m not sure if you call it a dremel around the world..but it is a hobby tool, motorized with bits that spin and I know several dogowners who use them. You would still have to acclimatize the dog to the tools but it is less likely to cut the quick this way. DDB´s suggestion on acclimatizing him is the way to go.

My dog hated it too.
What I did is the following. He loves his treats...so I would pull out the treat and the nail clipper...and set them both on the floor. He would have to come near for the treat with the clipper in plain view. I kept doing this until he was comfortable coming around the clipper. Then I would push him further by making him sit.. and I would grab his paw...and play with a nail...with the clipper still on the floor
then he would get a treat. I kept this up...and then when he was relaxed about this.. then I moved it further.. I would make him come sit and hold his paw up..and I would touch his paw with the clipper..and give him a treat....on and on this went..until I was able to clip one nail..and then a treat...and again..work on this.. until maybe you can do a nail..a treat a nail a treat..on and on..
little steps at a time.
Now I can clip his nails and he stands still for it. Mind you..he still does not like it.. and if he knows its happening he would hide if he could.. LOL
But he does stand for it. It just takes lots of patience and time... weeks..maybe months...
My mom´s dog won´t let her clip her nails at all. I can clip them with no issues. .. but then my mom´s dog bosses her around... she won´t boss me.

my parents´ dog had some dental work done and when he was asleep for that, they cut his nails. he is horrible for it, and my roxie picked up a few tips from him. what i try is just doing one or two nails at a time (make sure you remember which ones) and then reward her for being good by letting her get up. lots of praise and petting and treats can´t hurt either!!!

but if all else fails, i would try the vet or groomers. when i take roxie there i always stay with her and stand by her head to pet her and kiss her and talk to her and that helps sometimes too.

good luck!!

anton hates his nails clipped to. what i do is that when he sleep soundly i will lift his little paws lightly and will start to clip. it was ok but after few clippings it doesnt work anymore lol he will wake up and will give me grrrr. so what i do i bring him with me in my morning walking. coz my black lab who exercise everyday has short nails we dont clipped him. and this works with anton too. now we dont fight with regards to his nails

We take the dogs to the vet or groomer. Tried since they were babies to get them used to it but it was impossible.

All of this is good advice. I am a groomer and find some dogs impossible to cut their nail and they have to be sedated. Try patting her while holding the nail cutters and when she isnt looking freaked out by that move on to rubbing them up and down her legs do this for a few weeks before even attempting to try apply it to her nails. Then move on to tapping it very gently on her paws in a really relaxed enviroment say when you are sitting down watching tv and patting her. Treats can be involved but that can alsmost turn into a two person job. When Im pressed for time and cant get the dog to desenatise I have a vet nurse help me by constantly feeding high value treats to the dog while doing their nails, that way their attention is on the treats, but they have to be to die for type treats!!! Good luck and let us know how your progress is going with the desensatiation to the nail clippers. Good luck xx

Thanks for all the advice. With regards to treats and pats its no use.Even with treats his attention is focused on his nails LOL.He will get the treat but hide his paws under. We did let the vet do it before but it took 3 persons to just hold him and even the vet had a hard time doing it.I hope there are some products which can provoke him to scratch it and cause his nails to shorten.
We were advised by a groomer that there is a boundary in the nail. The problem is he was talking about white nails.Malli has black nails so its really very difficult to estimate the length to be cut in order not to bleed.

ANOTHER QUESTION ON NAIL CLIPPERS, (not an answer, sorry) I NEED SUGGESTIONS!!
-
O.k., of course Cracker hates his nails done too, and I don´t blame him! I only know of two types of clippers (the kind you put the tip of the nail in the hole and the blade comes up, and the kind where it *kinda* looks like scissors and snips ´em) I was wondering if anyone knows if their is a special kind for small dogs?? That would be sooo helpful! Thanx

In regard to when to cut your dogs nails (black ones are tricky!!) If he is standing up and you can see his nails rubbing on the ground then they need to be trimmed slightly. If they dont touch the ground at all leave them alone as you will certinaly make them bleed. You could also try using a file either human ememry board or you can buy eletrical ones, you could try cat nail clippers for smaller breeds but the still look like scissors. Please ask your groomer or vet how they are doing the nails as sometimes these people are compounding the problems. I know it is extreem but you could employ a dog behaviouralist for advice xx
