DOGS ´SANS FRONTIERES´

United Dogs has grown into a great International Forum. Its very success, though, has given rise to a bit of a problem, and a wonderful opportunity.

The problem is the language barrier. The opportunity is to overcome it!

Did you know, for example, that in England I am a dog; in France I am a ´chien´ (pronounced ´shan´), in Spain, and lots of other countries, I am a ´perro´ (pronounced just like that), and in Portugal and Brazil I am a ´cao´ (pronounced, much to my horrow and amazement ´cow´)?

Some of us are students of what, to us, is a foreign language. How much easier it is when the subject matter of what we are reading is something which interests us. In my puppy days we were taught all about ´the pen of my aunt´ - and how ´my postilion has been struck by lightening´. How boring! Now, thanks to United Dogs we can learn about much more interesting things - such as ´I found my dog in a rescue centre´ or ´My bone is buried under the bed!"

Everytime we get a doggy-mail in Spanish or in Tagalog we are getting not just a strange message, but a chance to work at it to discover its meaning, learn a bit of somebody else´s language, and also to help somebody learn a bit of ours, in an interesting and easy way!

Thank you United Dogs!

FLOYD THE DOG

Here in the Philippines, we have so many languages (that we don´t even understand each other well) LOL... but our national languages are Tagalog and English... We, the one grew up in Manila or NCR, don´t understand or know our other provincial languages as some of them, in the province, don´t know Tagalog... so we just speak or talk in English or have an interpreter if needed... So, Argiro, I think Iro is dog in Butuan City a place far away from Manila... Here in Manila is aso as Spyke commented...

Yes, and yet despite not being mutually intelligible, Philippine languages tend to be referred to by Filipinos as dialects. as far as i know there are too many to mentions, but the most common are Bikolano, Cebuano, Ilokano, Kapampangan, Ilonggo, Hiligaynon, Waray-waray, and many more and of course Tagalog, and Malay spoken among Muslims living in Southern Philippines.. we are very rich in dialects..but i can only speak Tag-lish words

Yes and if I may add this being a foreigner living among Filipinos almost everybody speaks English here unlike Thailand or Malaysia where you will have a hard time crossing country - not to mention Taiwan where it is a nightmare. But here even visiting the wonderful seven waterfalls nearby Lake Sebu in Mindanao a very kind gentleman with a horse, a bolo and a G-string spoke in perfect English with me while showing me the way out of the forest! Amazing Philippines!

19.May 2008 14:24

The igorots from the mountain province, sagada, baguio etc spoke also in perfect english visit banaue and the sagadas its also wonderful there

19.May 2008 14:43

wow, sooooo many languages/dialects in one same country!!!!
i am so NOT used to that, greece is so small and we all speak the same language, of course there are dialects (cretan, pontiac, etc) but spoken only amongst the very old people leaving in villages.... for the rest everybody speaks the same language, maybe with a bit differentiation in accent....
but, well, i guess philippines is a totally different country

p.s. my real name is Argiro (means silver in greek), but my friends used the short version, Iro (which is dog in Butuan City? )

19.May 2008 14:49

IRO means dog in Visayan dialect. It is spoken in parts of the Philippines which includes Central Visayas and part of Mindanao. I am fluent in Visayan dialect having studied in Davao and worked in Bohol and Cebu. "Ka Nindot Sa Imong Iro!!!" That´s how Cebuanos say "How Beautiful Is Your Dog!!!"
