When I grew up my dogs were very much part of the family but they lived outside for the most part. Now I have a 30 kg Lab who is treated like a lap dog. She is very much an inside dog. Sleeps inside and if we are inside so is she. During the day she is left outside while we are at work, but there is no problem to elave her in the house unsupervised for the entire day. Even when she was quite young we could leave her alone in the house. Now I cant imagine it any other way.

Laddy is an inside dog, he does like to go outside during the day but I leave the back door open so he can come in when he wants, I don´t work so I can be with him during the day
